House Boat
The Back Story
Mothership Marine has its origins on the 29th July 2007 in Berowra Waters, just north of Sydney, Australia. The Knox family were out on their ‘rubber ducky’ one Sunday afternoon. Berowra Waters are sheltered and make an excellent mooring place for all sorts of craft, many of which are houseboats.
It got Tim Knox thinking. But it wasn’t until five years later that the first deliveries of components were being unloaded to build the world’s first solar electric houseboat. “It was a massive leap of faith and in some respects we were before our time but all involved are hugely proud of the boat we built” says Tim Knox.
Although the Knoxes are all now Australian citizens, extended family circumstances meant they needed to return to the UK.
Much of what was learnt in Australia is now being employed to great effect in current boats in the UK. It is hoped some day soon to continue the development of the solar electric houseboat but for the moment our priorities are the narrowboats and the day boats for inland waterways.
The Mothership Houseboat is designed to be used all year round. Regardless of the weather she offers a comfortable platform and a great getaway. A large solar array keeps batteries charged, these can then be used either to power her electric motors or house appliances.
